Hi Folks--
I know that the welcome page still shows a May 25 meeting on the calendar, but since that's Memorial Day weekend and some of us will be on the road, I propose that we postpone briefly and have our next meeting on the following Sunday (June 1). I'm OK with the time established by Katy (4:00 p.m.), but I'd be OK with making it a little earlier too. Feedback is appreciated on both counts. I'm OK with holding the meeting at my house in Durham, but I warn the allergic among us that I have dogs and cats. I think it would be nice to meet sometimes in a public venue too, but this will get us started. Again, other suggestions are welcome. I know more of us are from Raleigh than anywhere else, and I'm sympathetic to the potential hardship for them. For our first meeting, I was thinking about a short mixer with snacks and beverages, then a DVD, then some casual discussion (and more snacks and drinks) afterward. Two hours, maybe? I have a few things we could watch: - Dawkins' "Root of All Evil" BBC special, based on The God Delusion; - Jonathan Miller's BBC documentary called "A Rough History of Disbelief," a brilliant and entertaining history of Freethought from the Greeks to present day; - The God Who Wasn't There - Sam Harris lecture based on The End of Faith that aired on CSPAN. I'd like to generate a list of books, DVDs and other media that members would like to share with the group, but for now we can just decide what to watch first. If you have something of your own to suggest, I'll be happy to put it at the top of the playlist. Remember that when you reply to these emails you'll be replying to the whole group by default so it will be easier for us all to stay on the same page. I look forward to hearing from you and to meeting you in a couple of weeks! Peace, Richard |
